Discrimination

Discrimination is treating someone unfairly or inequitably because they belong to a particular group. It is unlawful to discriminate against people on the grounds of their race, colour, nationality, descent, ethnic or ethno-religious background. In general, most organisations are proactive in ensuring there is no discrimination displayed within their volunteer program and among staff.

Discrimination takes two forms, direct and indirect. Both are against the law. Direct discrimination means treatment that is obviously unfair.

Disability discrimination is unfair treatment or harassment because a person has a disability, someone thinks they have a disability or because of a person’s association with a person with a disability.
