Disability Awareness
In my own words, a disability is any physical, sensory, psychiatric or learning barrier that makes a person different from the norm. It’s important to realise that people with disabilities are people first and their disability is secondary; although it is an integral part of their life, disability must not be the dominant force in it. Our aim is to help your organisation embrace diversity among your volunteers. We want you to feel comfortable recruiting people with disabilities or mental health issues, and utilising their skills, abilities and contribution to benefit your organisation.
The aim of this information is to:
- Outline the benefits to your organisation by incorporating an inclusive culture into your volunteer program.
- Look beyond the person’s differences and discover how individuals can positively contribute to your volunteer program.
- Show you how you can promote diversity from within – both with paid staff and other volunteers.
- Help you understand some of the issues that may be associated with specific conditions, and whether this would impact on their volunteering.
- Explore the best way to communicate and teach your new volunteer by taking into account the learning style that works best for them.
